[ Asian American Identity in the Design World ]

Poster Design

For this Graphic Design History poster, I chose the topic of Asian American identity in the design world because I wanted to not only highlight but amplify the voices of Asian American designers, works they’ve designed, and studios they’re a part of. In AIGA, the oldest and largest professional organization for design, only about six percent of designers are reported to be Asian. For the few Asian American designers that are well known, they’ve had to work extremely hard to get to where they are now. I wanted to highlight the identity of Asian American designers and the duality of the two cultures they experience, which I tried to show within the levels of hierarchy of text on the expressive side. I brought in the idea of “bridging the gap” through the color blocks in the background and show how Asian American designers being a part of multiple cultures can be a positive as well. The text within the left color block shows historical moments within the Asian American design world, whereas the text within the right color block show Asian American designers, studios, and their creations.
