[ A Redlined Past, A Hotter Future ]

Editorial Design

A Redlined Past, A Hotter Future is about the negative impacts of climate change that have happened to formerly redlined communities in Richmond, Virginia. The size of my magazine is 7.25 x 10.25, after the size of W.E.B. DuBois’ Data Portraits of Visualizing Black America. My work is designed to highlight black designers - using typefaces by Joshua Darden, who’s credited as the first black typeface designer, and vocal type, while creating a design that is inspired from old urban planning and redlining maps. The numbers and letters on the edges of a few spreads reference what is used to find locations on maps. I used colors from the map of redlining in Richmond shown on the first spread to show the impact of the “hazardous” and “declining” areas. The Martin typeface from vocal type references the “I Am A Man” posters which I drew into some of the pull quotes. I also used temperatures as page numbers to reference the ever-rising temperatures and heat that the redlined communities are experiencing to an even worse degree than others to this day.
