[ The Joy Luck Club ]

Book Cover Design

The Joy Luck Club is set in China and America, with interwoven stories about mothers, daughters, and their relationships, speaking of past history and future possibilities. This book cover design was created using the method that nothing could be touched digitally (i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator) until you were piecing the covers together, and had to be designed using found materials. Food is a huge theme in the book, and a big part of how the entire story comes together with the mothers and their daughters gathering around food to exchange stories, so I decided to use Chinese noodles and alphabet soup to show the different cultures and generations on my book cover. I laid out each element by hand and photographed with my digital camera; the cursive-like Chinese noodles are supposed to represent Chinese culture and the older mothers, while the alphabet soup represents American culture and the younger daughters through the youth that alphabet soup has to it. The color red is also a major symbol of luck in Chinese culture. I highlighted the many dualities within the book, of expectations, hopes, and dreams that the Chinese mothers have for their American-born daughters.
